Lost Camera Story

I recently read about someone who lost their camera bag in Africa and it reminded me of something that happened to us a couple of years ago.

I was on a trip to Europe with my son and my father-in-law.  On the second day of our trip we took a taxi to the train station in Paris for a day trip to Normandy.  When we entered the station my father-in-law said that he had lost his camera.  We thought it must have been left in the cab, or it must have been stolen!  I assured my father-in-law that we could call the cab company when we got back that evening.

The next morning I checked my email and had a message from my wife.  She said that a lady in Paris had found the camera, called her sister in Brampton, who called my mother-in-law in Niagara Falls, who called my wife in Ottawa, who emailed me in Paris!  She had left her phone number for us in Paris.

I immediately called her and she described how she found the camera on the ground near the train station.  She gave us directions how to get to her house to retrieve the camera.  Take the metro to the end of the line, take a bus to the end of a line, find a phone and she would come down and meet us!

We followed the instructions and soon enough we were at the location calling her to meet us.  She came out holding the camera in the air and greeted us.  My father-in-law was so happy to be reunited with his camera and was ready to offer a big reward.  The lady refused all attempts to reward her and spoke about how important pictures are to the picture taker.

We had been warned that Paris was notorious for pickpockets, so it was great to experience the opposite.  I hope that we can all be as kind and considerate when we find something of value!

Summer 2010

Hard to believe that the summer is over and we are now well into the fall schedule. Amazing how quickly time passes by! Our family had a great summer. It did seem like we traveled a fair amount and put a few km’s on the van!

I put together a few of my favourite pictures from the summer and they highlight some of the things we did.

Lost in Budapest

Last night we had an interesting experience in Budapest! Eleven of us arranged to go out and eat together in downtown Budapest and rather than take the tram, we decided to take taxis. The hotel called three taxis and we set out on our adventure, with the hotel concierge giving the drivers directions.  This point is where things began to fall apart!

I was in the third taxi with one other person and we left about 5 minutes after the others. We were a little skeptical that our driver was taking the direct route, but who is to say! The driver dropped us off in the middle of a commercial section and said, “one block that way.” At this point it also started to rain, so this added to the stress of the situation.

We walked towards what we thought was the right direction and did not see anyone. At the junction of the road we decided to split up and go in separate directions to see if we could find our group. As I walked down the road, there was no sign of anyone in our party, but I was propositioned twice! Seeing no one, I headed back to the rendezvous point and the other person was waiting there for me.

We ended up walking down the restaurant district hoping that we might spot someone, but with no luck! We decided to find our own place to eat and ended up in a restaurant, eating in their outside terrace. (Luckily it had a good canvas roof as it poured rain a couple of times.) Some persistent musicians kept coming by until they were graced with a Hungarian bill.  The meal was okay, but I just had that nagging feeling that everyone was out to take advantage of the foreigners!

On our trip home we decided to be brave and take the tram. The wait was not too long and it dropped us off a couple of blocks from the hotel. The evening was not what I expected, but I appreciated the opportunity to make a new friend and at least I have an interesting story to tell!

Have you had anything similar happen to you?

Hungary Update

We just finished our last session of the Summit here in Budapest. I am here representing the Canadian Bible Society and some of the things we are doing with social networking.  It has been great to meet other people involved in this work and to be able to come home with some significant takeaways.

Last night we enjoyed an amazing dinner on the Danube. The fun part was getting there in the rain and I emphasize the word RAIN.  Several people were soaked through by the time we got to the boat. It cruised for several hours and we enjoyed a buffet supper.  It was a little hard to talk as we were at the “band” end of the boat, but out on the deck it was a little quieter. The most spectacular part was the lights of the city once the sun had gone down.

Today has been a day of wrapping up and prioritizing most of the things we have been talking about. After our last session we headed over to see the offices of the Hungarian Bible Society. It was amazing to hear the story of what happened after the Communists took over and how Christianity survived during that time! There work continues to grow and serves the Bible needs of this country.

I feel that it was very helpful to meet here and have some valuable learning lessons from around the world! Looking forward to meeting some of these folks again and sharing some stories! It was also great to see the city of Budapest and some of the beautiful architecture.

Do you have a must “see” place in the world?
