New Discovery

I recently started using boxee as one of my main tv viewing platform. I have had it for awhile on my apple tv, but we added a boxee box to the system in the basement. Basically boxee pulls content from across the web and you would not believe how much content is out there.

Here are a few observations about boxee:

  • Really simple to use and set-up
  • Real content power comes from adding applications. Navi-x is one of my favorites
  • Almost any movie you can think of is out there
  • Sometimes you need to be patient as it can take time for the content to stream
  • The only drawback I can see to not move from satellite/cable is an ability to watch live sports

If you have ever tried boxee, I would love to hear your feedback and what apps you use?

Have a NEW idea?

Recently I was at a movie with my kids and at the end of all the previews my youngest son leaned over and said, “Is there nothing new?”  All of the previews that day were based on books or video games, so it was an interesting comment that he was making!

How often do we find ourselves lacking the creative energy and will to pursue new thoughts and ideas? I often find myself thinking about another person’s idea rather than a new idea. I build on what someone else has started rather than starting something fresh myself. I do the same things over and over because that is what I know and am comfortable with!

I observe organizations that do this all the time and I realize that sometimes out of necessity they have to do that. But, I see so much value in getting in a room with creative people and thinking creative thoughts. Being able to step outside the boundaries of our minds and leap into the great unknown.

Some idea busting ideas:

1. Spend time with kids, as they are not restricted in their thought process like some adults.

2. Take a different route home, as you might see something differently.

3. Meet with a group of people once a month and brainstorm new ideas together. Maybe a creative lunch or coffee break?

4. Write down a new idea and see where the idea might take you. Even the process of writing something down can lead to getting creativity flowing.

5. Don’t be afraid of failure!

How have you been able to develop new ideas?  What holds you back from doing that? How much time do you devote to this pursuit?

Why Should I Use Twitter?

Well, I was just asked the question again, “Why should I use twitter?” It seems to be a popular question from people who are not engaged in twitter, or who gave up after using it for a day.

I have been using twitter for awhile and have been slowly learning a lot about how to effectively use this powerful tool.  Like many people, I could not initially see the benefits, but I must confess that I am now hooked!  May people are worried that twitter is simply about what I had for breakfast! But, used the right way it can be a very powerful leadership tool that reaches out across multiple boundaries!

I recently found this little video with Michael Hyatt, the CEO of Thomas Nelson Publishers, where he talks about twitter being the greatest leadership tool ever invented! He is a great example of someone who is using social media to influence people. You will also notice that he has over 80,000 twitter followers.

Have you been using twitter? Why or why not?

Is Social Media a FAD?

I am often asked by my colleagues at work if Social Media is a fad? It is an interesting question as most of them are looking for immediate results and impact. In addition, most of them are either uncomfortable with new ways, or just have not given the time necessary to begin to understand it.

I found this little video to be very informative in getting to understand Social Media. Some very interesting statistics about age of users and those who no longer use traditional communication. I think it does answer the question in regards to Social Media being a fad.

Do you have questions about Social Media? What are you skeptical about?
